Ancient Temples, caves, palaces, forts, national parks, royal heritage, tribal culture, and tiger spotting – all naturally assembled in one state, that’s what Indian state of Madhya Pradesh (MP) is renowned for. As India’s most central state and home to inimitable historical and cultural gems, Madhya Pradesh is a state that offers an enticing holistic vacation like none other.
We get into an exclusive conversation with the Principal Secretary, Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, Shri Sheo Shekhar Shukla who shares insights into the state board’s tourism policy, what makes MP a veritable tourist gem and how the tourist numbers are envisaged to grow by leaps and bounds.
Here are some excerpts from the interview-
What is your strategy to promote MP Tourism?
Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board seeks to establish the state as a premier, multifaceted destination by showcasing its unique offerings in wildlife, heritage, culture, spirituality, and natural beauty while embracing global trends like experiential and sustainable travel. After achieving a record-breaking 112.1 million tourist visits in 2023—three times that of 2022—we focus on immersive storytelling, innovative marketing campaigns, and digital strategies such as virtual tours and influencer collaborations to engage global audiences. We highlight niche segments, including heritage tourism, wildlife safaris, and spiritual journeys, while empowering local communities through initiatives like homestays, rural tourism, and promoting tribal crafts. Our partnerships with travel professionals, roadshows, and participation in international fairs like ITB Berlin and WTM London have strengthened our global reach. Coupled with infrastructure development, our strategy positions Madhya Pradesh as the “Heart of Incredible India,” offering diverse, authentic experiences.
MP is a treasure trove of tourist spots like national parks, historic spots, natural beauty, etc. Any particular places that you are targeting to promote?
Madhya Pradesh is a treasure trove of diverse attractions, catering to every type of traveler. While we promote the state as a whole, we prioritize key destinations to showcase its multifaceted appeal. Our national parks—Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, and Satpura—are renowned for conservation efforts and tiger sightings, establishing Madhya Pradesh as the “Tiger State” and “Cheetah State” of India. Iconic heritage sites like Khajuraho (UNESCO World Heritage), Orchha, and Mandu highlight the state’s architectural brilliance, complemented by Sanchi and Bhimbetka Rock Shelters, reinforcing its historical significance. Nature lovers are drawn to the Marble Rocks of Bhedaghat and the serene landscapes of Pachmarhi. Spiritual destinations like Ujjain, Omkareshwar, and Maheshwar offer authentic experiences, while lesser-known gems like Chitrakoot and Tamia reflect the state’s rich cultural and natural beauty. Through these efforts, we present a holistic view of Madhya Pradesh’s vibrant heritage and landscapes.
How do you ensure that tourists feel safe in the state?
Safety is a top priority for Madhya Pradesh Tourism. We ensure a secure environment through proactive measures, community engagement, and technology. A dedicated tourism police force, multilingual information centers, and 24/7 assistance provide constant support. Our safety protocols, including hygiene audits and green initiatives, enhance visitor well-being. GPS-enabled transport and CCTV surveillance add extra security. Training local stakeholders, including women guides, fosters inclusivity and builds confidence. The women-run Handloom Café in Pranpur, Chanderi, exemplifies our commitment to safe, empowering spaces. These efforts make Madhya Pradesh a trusted and welcoming destination for all.
Are you also looking at promoting MP as a wedding tourism destination? If yes, which cities are you focusing on in particular?
While Madhya Pradesh does not have a dedicated wedding tourism policy, its rich heritage, scenic beauty, and modern amenities make it an ideal wedding destination. We spotlight cities like Orchha, Mandu, and Khajuraho, each offering a unique historical and cultural ambiance. Orchha’s palaces and temples provide a regal setting, Mandu’s romantic charm is perfect for intimate weddings, and Khajuraho’s iconic temples and lush landscapes offer a beautiful blend of culture and elegance. Spiritual hubs like Ujjain and Maheshwar cater to those seeking a meaningful connection during their celebrations. This approach not only positions Madhya Pradesh as a premier wedding destination but also supports local craftsmanship.
On an average, how many days does a tourist need to visit MP?
To experience the diverse attractions of Madhya Pradesh, we recommend a 7 to 10-day itinerary, tailored to individual interests. A 7-day trip covers key wildlife parks like Kanha and Bandhavgarh, heritage sites such as Orchha and Khajuraho, and spiritual destinations like Ujjain and Omkareshwar. A 10-day itinerary offers deeper exploration, adding scenic spots like Pachmarhi, Bhedaghat, and Mandu, along with immersive cultural experiences, including tribal art, regional cuisine, and local festivals. Our flexible itineraries cater to varied preferences, encouraging longer stays and promoting sustainable tourism growth.
